MARIANA COPELLO

Venezuela

Lives in:

Houston,Texas.

What do you do for a living?

Personally, I am the mother of two wonderful children, Beatriz Elena and Carlos Henrique. I have shared a life of happiness and blessings with my husband for almost 30 years. In my life I always say that my #1 profession is the role of mother. Professionally I am dedicated to developing works of art in the field of sculpture, installation and graphic works. I like to write and communicate through art.

What has been your best learning in the last year?

I always try to see the positive in things. Despite having lived through a year of change, and going through a complete transformation in our daily routine where we had to give up space, time, affections ... It was a year of valuing who we are as a family. As a mother, wife and professional I learned to balance my roles and live that unique opportunity and time that we all had to be together at home, to understand and love each other.

What are you reading?

I like to read about art, history, and biographies. I recently visited Calder's exhibition at MoMA with my family and they gave me my next book to explore “Alexander Calder. Modern from the start "

Do you have something in your bucket list that you would like to do as soon as possible?

I love traveling. I have had the opportunity to live in different countries and learn about new cultures. I would like to go back to South Africa where we lived, to travel to Spain when I can again and in my bucket list is a dream trip to see Eastern Europe with my husband.

Give us a tip / hack that you have learned through social networks and that changed your life.

"The more you define your audience, the more effective your communication is"

What is the most important? Having your own identity, what makes you different from others and a unique being. Define who you want to speak to, what message you want to communicate and be consistent in your content line.

If you could have dinner with a celebrity or historical person, who would it be?

Nelson Mandela

If eating and drinking what you wanted had no consequences, what would you eat more often?

I love to eat rich. My husband is a divine cook. We are total foodies! We love to cook together and also to share with friends. The pleasures of life sometimes lie in the simplest things. There is nothing I like more than freshly baked French bread. I actually like EVERYTHING;)

What do you recommend on Netflix?

I love The Crown. I have seen all the seasons.

Song of the moment?

I honestly don't listen to much music. When I work I like to do it in silence in my study. These days I was super happy when I finished a project and I was driving in the car with the song “Don’t stop me now” by Queen at full volume. I love the classics!

If you could have a super power. What would it be and why?

TO FLY!! I would travel the world in a single hug!

LIA PELLERANO

Dominican Republic

What has been your best learning in this past year?

It will sound very odd, because I am in one of the best moments in my career, but the pandemic has taught me that our professional lives are not the most important thing in life. I used to live with my head in the future; in fact, by following the fast calendar of the fashion industry, I lived by postponing motherhood. With this force pause I began to think about what I wanted for the next 10 years, and all roads pointed to a balanced family life with job satisfaction. It is for reason that right now Tomás is already six months in the oven, and I enjoy the details of each day of this pregnancy. This new, much more mature way of thinking has even affected the way I buy clothes and accessories: I no longer think about trends, but have focused on investing in really timeless pieces. The virus has already shown me that, in reality, one does not have the slightest control over what is going to happen ... and that is why it is important to enjoy each day. After all, everything in life is a matter of perspective. It's all a matter of being more aware of what we do.

Where do you live?

In Santo Domingo, a city of just over 4 million inhabitants in its suburbs. I know that many times the Caribbean is not taken into account as a market within the Latin American panorama, but this is a mistake: I know that in the Dominican Republic it is imported and apart from it, design, gastronomy and high-end fashion are produced. Many people know our beaches, but we are more than that: I also recommend getting to know the creative and financial realms that we have in the capital city.

What do you do for a living?

After working as a fashion magazine editor, I became an entrepreneur to promote initiatives within the fashion sector. That is why today I represent Latin American designers in the country - Yliana herself can tell you about my trunk shows - and I will soon be launching an online commerce project that will connect many points throughout the continent.

What are you reading?

I am a Cartier ambassador for the Dominican Republic, and I have a special relationship with the pieces of the brand that I have inherited and accumulated throughout my life. However, after reading The Cartiers, the book that Francesca Cartier Brickell (@creatingcartier) wrote about the company that her grandfather inherited - the last member of the family in charge before the brand was acquired by Richemont - I have much more respect to each of his creations. It is incredible to see that even today the vision of Louis Cartier continues to delight new generations of consumers, and it was also beautiful to understand that the symbol of the panther speaks more about independence and female emancipation than one could assume.

Give us a tip / hack that you have learned through social networks and that changed your life?

When we were working together on the production of costumes for the hosts of Dominican’s Got Talent, I always saw makeup artist Bryan Santana Ubiera (@makeupbybryansu) upload some photos and videos behind the scenes with some really cool effects and filters. But he already gave me the secret: it is the Prequel App, and since then my Stories have never been the same.

Do you have something in your bucket list that you would like to do as soon as possible?

I would love, in my next stage of life, to go live in Miami to achieve that personal-professional balance that I am looking for. I dream of owning a home in Coral Gables and spending quality time with my husband and son. But I also know that Miami is a regional hub for Latin American design, and that move can be very helpful for my expansion plans throughout the continent.

If you could have dinner with a celebrity or historical person, who would it be?

I've always wondered how Daphne Guinness keeps up with the passage of time. She is in her early 50s, but at the same time she looks younger and much older. I think that's because, no matter what time the world is in, she continues to present herself in a way that is relevant to what we want. I would love to have dinner with her and ask her about her favorite moments in her life, because I have a suspicion that she is so authentic and so true to herself that she remains current without having to plan.

If eating and drinking what you wanted had no consequence, what would you eat more often?

I am a fan of pizzas. Right now I am going through a phase of infatuation with Pizzeria Trattoria Martini (@pizzeriatrattoriamartini), with two restaurants in Santo Domingo, one on Pedro A. Bobea street in Bella Vista and another on Virgílio Díaz Ordóñez del Evaristo Morales. If you see me out there, please don't separate me from my corn and bacon pizza, I'm in love.

What do you recommend on Netflix?

Two episodes in particular of the series Street Food Latin America, as they allow for the innovative tenacity of women. The first is the one that portrays Pato Rodríguez in Buenos Aires, explaining how she used food to get out of the shadow of the men around her; the second is the story of Doña Vale in Oaxaca, with some memelas that speak of an enormous creative wealth. But beware: don't watch those episodes on an empty stomach!

Song of the moment.

I'm slightly obsessed with Justin Bieber's Peaches. I think it's because I loved seeing him in the video dancing with so much flow in his peach suit. Like he does in that video, I put it on when I'm in the car —and for that same reason I also do a combo with Driver's License- by Olivia Rodrigo it makes me nostalgic on the road every time we to the beach at the end of the week.

If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?

Become invisible! 😂 I am an introvert, so I would love to have a power that allows me to disappear and teleport home, to recharge and connect with myself for 15 minutes, for an hour or for a whole day, depending on how drained I am. Top up along with my Martini pizza, Justin Bieber's Peaches, and a chapter from The Cartiers book? Exit!
