Small is a Statement

The story behind the Mini Giovanna

Small, unique and refined. The perfect finishing touch to any look that won’t go unnoticed...I call her the Mini Giovanna: the bag that quickly became the must-have for YLIANA YEPEZ enthusiasts.

As small as it is, the Mini Giovanna became the biggest YY staple. After its debut in my first collection, it gained a lot of followers...It is one of the pieces that my customers get most excited about (and of course one of the bags I look forward to designing the most)!

The first time around the Mini Giovanna was actually not so mini, it was just the Giovanna. However, I felt that it was a bit too large to carry around so I shrunk it down… and the Mini Giovanna was born! I was really happy with how it turned out.

Backtracking a bit, the ideation phase of the Mini Giovanna started with my own needs in mind…I wanted a unique and minimal piece that was also functional. Hence, the practicality of being able to use it as a cross body for casual events, while boasting the elegance of converting to a clutch for going out at night.

The name "Giovanna" went back to my first collection, when I made the decision to name my bags after Italian women. After all I have roots in Italy so I thought it would be a fun and unique way to pay homage to my ancestors. Giovanna is an Italian name that is simple but exotic, in its own right. Conveniently, the name Giovanna actually means gift from god but it is out of pure coincidence that I chose that name…

As stylish as it is, the Mini Giovanna has made more than just a fashion statement. In 2014, a humanitarian crisis was escalating in my home country, leaving me heartbroken and with a feeling of urgency to help. The design of the Mini Giovanna Venezuela was a way to raise my voice and bring international awareness to the situation during PFW. With the support of many editorials, I raised funds through sales for Fundacion Sanando and Hogar Bambi to help children and families in need.

Two other special editions were made to honor the independence days of France and USA, based on the color of their flags.

Last but not least, I also had the great privilege to be selected by Vogue México y Latinoamérica to design an exclusive and unique Mini Giovanna in commemoration of their 15th anniversary.

It has been so exciting to see that my clients love the Mini Giovanna as much as I do, and that really inspires me to progressively get more creative with them. I almost like to design the Mini Giovannas with the idea of them being a collector’s item in mind.

Some of my favorites so far? The Malefica and the Positano. However, the Mini Giovanna from my S/S 17 collection Pool Party is something unexpected…a truly refreshing and practical statement piece. It may quickly take the cake as my new favorite after this summer!
